From a place of love and empowerment we are creating resilient community through cooperation.
Chuckanut Transition Initiating Committee: We are a neighborly group in the Samish Watershed dedicated to creating resilient community. From left to right, back row: Anett Witter, Sarai, Waylon and Samson Stevens, Janet McKinney, Chris Soler, Chuck Nafziger, Mike Stevens, Wendy Swanson. From left to right, front row: Dan and Patty Sweaney, Kathi Marlowe. Not pictured: Keith Witter, Mac Stevens, June Jones, Verena Giebels and Kate Bowers.
We meet once a month to coordinate on going efforts through the Bow Little Market, the Samish Watershed Garden Tour and various other community outreach activities. We actively collaborate with the Alger Community Hall, Friday Creek Habitat Stewards, the Skagit Conservation District, and many local businesses.
Originally I initiated Transition in my community out of love for my children. Now that we have been working together for over three years, I continue the work out of love for the group as well. We try and balance our efforts between those that engage the public with more personal cooperative activities. We share knowledge, time and resource. My life has become a walking, talking cooperative. For example, Anett and Janet help me out with the baby when I need it. Chris has helped us hook up solar panels. Patty is a wizard in seasonal whole foods cooking and meat curing. Kathi is a marvel at home efficiency and leads an almost zero waste life style. Wendy is an inspiration in her garden. Dan is a wealth of knowledge regarding mechanics and remodel. Chuck reminds me that I often am too focused on the outcome and must remember to enjoy the journey.
My response, once rooted in fear, now grows from love and empowerment. By creating resilient community through cooperation I have also created a life that is more joyful and connected. The concern for the future is still there, but I find that through positive action and weaving together individual efforts the journey has become an adventure.
I would love to inspire and help other groups to form. If you wish for me to give a presentation or lead a discussion on my experiences through Chuckanut Transition please contact me at [email protected]. It is important that we share our stories of positive solutions. The corporate controlled media amplifies the negative and largely ignores the positive, especially at the small grassroots level. However, reconnecting as communities to create positive solutions is what our world needs the most. By sharing my story I can help brake the myth of powerlessness that enables so many to remain passive.
